Concept

This project consists of two typographic posters showcasing a male and female role model within professional soccer, paired with an empowering quote. Female athletes have been in a constant battle for their rights; a battle that leads to many young athletes to give up on their achievable goals. Same goes for a male athlete that may be faced with certain hardships which prevents them from reaching their goals. I utilized my passion for sports and issues surrounding gender in sport (i.e., unequal pay and hegemonic masculinity) to develop an art piece that conveys that both female and males athletes should be treated with respect and have equal opportunity to succeed in sport regardless of the hardships they may face.
  • Masking: I used both clipping and layer masks to create the typography. This allowed for the text to make up the jersey and take Modric and Sinclair’s body shape.

  • Typography: Using words to make up images ( Sinclair and Modric’s jersey’s)

  • Content-Aware Fill: By using the content-aware fill tool I was able to make both players jersey’s a solid colour while still looking realistic.

  • Pen Tool Into Selection: While cutting out both players from the original photos I used the pen tool to select their entire body then using the make: selection tool I was easily able to inverse the selection and delete the background.

  • Layer Styles: Used different layer styles to adjust the text and colouring in Christine Sinclair’s cutout.

Christine Sinclair Quote: "Aim higher follow your crazy dreams for me it happened to be soccer, it happened to be sports. To this day, I don't think I've worked a day in my life. When you're so passionate about what you do, you're willing to put in the extra work."
Luka Modric Quote: "I've seen a great deal of hardship in my life. The most important thing is to never give up. Never give in to circumstances, believe yourself and to solider on no matter what is in your way."
  • Cutouts: It took me multiple trials before getting a crisp looking cut-out. I tried various tools including the magnetic lasso tool, quick selection tool, and eraser tool. Each tool was very time consuming to use and did not come out the way I wanted it to. Until I finally stubbled across a great YouTube video that demonstrated how to perfectly cut-out any image. Once watching the tutorial and getting used to the tool I was easily able to cut- out both images quickly and effectively.

  • Text Arrangement: The arrangement of the text was probably the most challenging part while creating my masterpiece. I wanted to make the most empowering words larger than the rest and still needed to use the entire space from the top of the athletes chest to the end of their shorts. This was a lot of trial and error until I got the text properly proportioned and visual appealing.

  • Smudge Number: In the original tutorial I was following to create this poster they added a really unique smudge effect to the background number through using their own brush stencil. I various brushes from photos of marker and paint brush streaks, and beams. Although none of them fit into my poster. Next, I rasterized the layer with the number text and tried using the smudge tool, however this did not look good at all. As a result, I felt the poster looked good as is without the smudged number. If I tried to incorporate that concept I feel it would take away from the main focus of the athlete and typography.
